Letter to Neptune Beach city council from resident Ingrid Swaine Smalling:
"Mayor Brown and fellow council members,
After the last council meeting, I am wondering why we are even considering spending another dime on the senior center when it is obvious that we have a failing infrastructure that needs all the money we can get.
First of all, why do we even need a senior center? Our population is less than 8,000 people. How many of them are seniors who even use the center? The fact that Ms. Lynn had to bring in people from Jax Beach and Ponte Vedra to plead her case makes you wonder. Jacksonville Beach and Atlantic Beach have great senior centers that would welcome our seniors, just as we welcome their pickle ball players.
Why couldn't we use the Beach House in Jarboe Park for our community activities? To spend another $700,000 on a building that you have actually stated is worthless, is beyond belief.
The fact that we cannot provide our own citizens with adequate fire protection and have to rely on Atlantic Beach is an enormous problem. We cannot keep sweeping aside our water and sewer issues for vanity projects.
Thanks to Lauren Key for being the voice of reason. It is good to know that someone has the good sense to see the magnitude of the problem. It is disheartening, though, that she is the only one.
Please, please, stop the wasteful spending. Pretend for a minute that it's your money and not just an endless supply of free money.
Thank you for your consideration."
